The Illinois
Valley's oldest family-run furniture store was founded in 1888 by
our great grandfather, I.L. Steinberg. After immigrating to America
from Lithuania, he peddled merchandise in New York, and then
Chicago. When in Chicago, a friend told him coal mines were
developing in a new town called Spring Valley. He first peddled door
to door with a horse and wagon in the area's small towns. In 1888,
he purchased a building in Spring Valley
and opened his own store called S&L Department Store on Dakota
Street. The store later moved to 203 E. St. Paul Street and
the name changed to Steinberg's. After a fire in 1976, the
store moved to our current location on Route 6 at the West edge of
Peru. When you shop at Steinberg's, you are greeted by a member of
the family - third generation operator Charlie, Bruce
and Leslie from the fourth generation.
